Stock Market Faces Another Day of Decline – September 23, 2020

Stock Market Decline Continues Across the Board

Once again, all three major stock markets in New York City saw a drop, with the Dow Jones dropping 525.05, the NASDAQ dropping 330.652 and the S&P 500 dropping a total of 78.65. This marks the third day out of the past four of market trading that show a drop in stock value. This brings about yet another negative day for the stock market, with year-to-date numbers starting to show declines across each market.

 

The Dow Jones

The Dow Jones closed today at 26,763.13, with stock values opening at 27,413.60 they hit a daily high of 27,464.46 and a daily low of 26,716.12 before closing. This represents a 1.92% decrease over the course of the day. The five day change is down 4.53%, while the one month number represents a 5.46% decrease. Over the last three months the market has seen an increase of 5.18%, with a year-to-date decrease of 6.22%.

Overall, stocks that represented an increase over the day included UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH), Salesforce.com Inc. (CRM) and Home Depot Inc. (HD). Stocks that represented a loss included Nike Inc. (NKE), American Express Co. (AXP), and Dow Inc. (DOW).

 

NASDAQ

The NASDAQ closed today at 10,632.99, with stock values opening at 10,950.83. They hit a daily high of 10,962.03 and a daily low of 10,612.92 before closing. This represents a 3.02% decrease over the course of the day. The five day change is down 3.78%, while the one month number represents a 6.56% decrease. Over the last three months the market has seen an increase of 7.30%, with a year-to-date increase of 18.51%.

Overall, stocks that represented an increase over the day included 1-800-Flowers.com Inc. (FLWS) and 1Life Healthcare Inc. (ONEM). Stocks that represented a loss included 111 Inc. (YI), 10X Genomics Inc. (TXG), 21Vianet Group Inc. (VNET) and 1st Constitution Bancorp. (FCCY).

 

S&P 500

The S&P closed today at 3,236.92, with stock values opening at 3,320.11. They hit a daily high of 3,323.35 and a daily low of 3,232.57 before closing. This represents a 2.37% decrease over the course of the day. The five day change is down 4.39%, while the one month number represents a 5.66% decrease. Over thee last three months the market has seen an increase of 6.12%, with a year-to-date increase of 0.19%.

Overall, stocks that represented an increase over the day included Nike (NKE), Illumina (ILMN) and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG). Stocks that represented a loss included Sysco (SYY), DR Horton (DHI) and Albemarle (ALB).
